European Alliance for Access to Safe Medicines (EAASM)Nominated for hiding the involvement of big pharma corporations in their campaigns. Vote for the European Alliance for Access to Safe Medicines who failed to reveal their true motives and the industry funding behind their “public interest” campaign to remove counterfeit and sub-standard medicines from the supply chain.
EAASM describes itself as “an independent, cross-sector patient safety Alliance campaigning for the exclusion of counterfeit and substandard medicines from the supply chain”. In July 2008 they published a report “The Counterfeiting Superhighway – the growing threat of online pharmacies”, which was promoted at the European Parliament in September with an evening reception and an exhibition inside the Parliament. In the study and accompanying press release (“Death on the Net? Over 60% of Medicines Sold by Online Pharmacies are Fake”) EAASM hid the heavy involvement of pharmaceutical corporations in its work. EAASM is entirely funded by the big pharma corporations Bayer-Schering, Boehringer Ingelheim, Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Wyeth, and three smaller companies offering related services. Representatives of the pharma corporations Bayer-Schering, Eli Lilly and Pfizer sit on the board of EAASM. The London-based PR consultancy Medicom provides the secretariat for EAASM. Medicom sent out the press release for the report, they are listed as the only contact address in the study and they answer enquiries about EAASM. Until January 2008 Martin Ellis, director of Medicom Group, was also the director of EAASM. Neither Medicom nor EAASM have as yet registered with the European Commission’s voluntary register of lobbyists. Dodgy online pharmacies selling fake medicines are clearly a problem. But the Counterfeiting Superhighway report exaggerates the extent of the problem: the sample of online pharmacies was selected by feeding search engines with terms like “online pharmacy” or “buy cheap medicine” and by taking links from spam emails. Not surprisingly the majority of the “online pharmacies” in the research sample turned out to be fraudulent websites masquerading as online pharmacies. Such a biased sample is useful for those wanting to denounce internet trading in pharmaceuticals, and fits the agenda of the unnamed corporate funders of the report. In November 2007 EAASM published an earlier report attacking parallel trading in medicines as a serious hazard for patient safety. Parallel trade in medicines, undermines the practice of pharma companies to sell the same medicines at a higher price in some EU member states. Vote for EAASM if you don’t like this masquerade of the interests of big pharma. Comments258 Dr. MED Günther Kunald 12 April 2009: hier wird wohl alles von jedem hingeschrieben. was nun stimmmt bleibt fraglich, da jeder jedem widerspricht. Alles besteht aus Lobbyisten!!! 257 Richard 31 March 2009: yoyooyo i think this is a pice of shitty text, not so intresting, i was serching for some pOr*n and ended up at this site. 256 carole 19 February 2009: no comment... 248 leitsberger bianca 26 December 2008: medicine has beome much too expensive, and doctors have become dependant, the pharma firms desparately need better advice. People cannot afford this medicine any more. The whole industry needs to become reasonable, otherwise we will see the modern revolution (like in France and in russia some centuries ago - history always repeats itself) which is hopefully not what leading pharma companies desire 240 Debbie Knight 15 December 2008: "failed to reveal their true motives and the industry funding behind their “public interest” campaign".... It seems to me that they make it very clear they receive funding from pharmaceutical companies on their funding page of their website...? "online pharmacies was selected by feeding search engines with terms like “online pharmacy” or “buy cheap medicine”" they found online pharmacies by using such biased search terms as.....online pharmacy?! it seems to me that the threat of online pharmacies were exaggerated by this report, but the reasons you have given here for nominating the EAASM are poor 221 Sylvain Tardy 5 December 2008: and the winner is... Ils n'en parlent pas ? 82 Nurlia Basten (weibl.) 21 October 2008: Pharmaca industry should not have lobby anyway, in my opinion it only produces additional diseases through its medicines. 76 !!! 21 October 2008: Schon wieder so was. 28 Berthild Lorenz 21 October 2008: Die, die mitmachen sind ebensolche Verursacher, wie Die, die anzetteln ... 14 Nils Johnsen 21 October 2008: I think it will take nearly forever to shrink back the power of the big pharma business to a tolerable size. But all we can do is begin today. 12 Katharina Peters 21 October 2008: Gewinninteressen ersetzten Information zu Gesundheitsförderung. Pharmafirmen agieren menschenverachtend. 5 Dr. Andreas Wulf 20 October 2008: wichtige sache | |||||
